    • The EAS is a pan-Asia forum held annually by the leaders of 16 countries in East Asia and the region.

    • ROK-EAS Relations

    • The East Asian Summit(EAS) is a pan-Asia forum held annually by the leaders of 16 countries in East Asia and the region. The first summit was held in Kuala Lumpur on December 14, 2005 and Annual summit is held in parallel with ASEAN related meetings.

    • Outcome of the First EAS
      The top leaders of 16 countries, including the ASEAN members, Korea, China, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and India held the first EAS on December 14, 2005 following the ASEAN+3 Summit. They had a constructive exchange of ideas on major international political and economic issues, how to bolster the regional cooperation mechanism in East Asia and how to promote economic development in the region.

    • President Roh Moo-hyun called for a steady support of all the countries for building a peace mechanism on the Korean Peninsula and to express a resolve to tackle transnational crimes, including terrorism. He will emphasize the necessity of joint endeavors in preventing the spread of avian flu, building an early warning system for natural disasters and efficiently managing energy resources.

    • 2nd East Asia Summit
      On January 15 2007, President Roh Moo-hyun attended the 2nd EAS featuring the 16 heads of state representing Korea, China, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, India and the 10 ASEAN members.

    • At the second EAS, following the inaugural one held in Kuala Lumpur in 2005, the 16 leaders had open discussions on cooperative measures in 5 targeted areas of energy security, financial cooperation, education, avian influenza, and disaster management. In particular, the leaders signed the Cebu Declaration on Energy Security in East Asia designed for regional cooperation in the energy security sector.

    • President Roh proposed various cooperative measures in the energy security sector at this year's summit. He also stressed that the nations in the regions need to exert joint efforts to cooperate in education to nurture human resources, to prevent and cope with avian influenza(AI), to construct an early warning system against sudden disasters through use of sophisticated ICT, and to launch a viable financial network through active movement of capital among the member nations.

    • 3rd East Asia Summit
      On November 21 2008, President Roh Moo-Hyun attended the 3rd EAS Summit.

    • At the 3rd EAS, the 16 leaders had discussions on energy, environment and climate change, and leaders also exchanged views on regional issues such as the progress of Six-Party Talks and the situation in Myanmar as well as the Future Direction at the EAS. The leaders adopted " the Singapore Declaration on Climate Change, Energy and the Environment".

    • Presidnet Roh addressed the urgent cry of the global cimate change and environmental issues. He stated the Korean government's cooperation effort for human resources development, disaster reduction as well as avian influenza, and emphasized the importance of international efforts for their issues.
